RCP - RED Command Protocol.

There's two versions of RCP:

MōVI Pro, MōVI XL & Ronin 2 talk in RCP1.
RED V-RAPTOR & KOMODO talk in RCP2.

What is the function of RCP Translator?

Bi-directional conversion of RED Command Protocol between RCP1 and RCP2.

RCP Translator allows operators to wirelessly control RED DSMC3 parameters like FPS, shutter speed, ISO and other settings when flying these cameras on MōVI Pro, MōVI XL and Ronin 2 gimbals.

Why did we create RCP Translator?

There are thousands of MōVI Pro, MōVI XL and Ronin 2 gimbals active on sets around the world. These gimbals are still industry standard but are approaching 6 years old and new RED DSMC3 cameras have since been released. Unfortunately these gimbals and cameras do not talk to each other.

Operators of DSMC2 have previously had the ability to change FPS, ISO and WB from remote controllers. Moving to DSMC3, that familiar workflow has been crippled.

So we decided to do something about it!

RCP Translator returns wireless control for DSMC3.

This product will undoubtedly save critical time on set. No longer will a drone operator need to land to change camera settings.

RCP Translator will be used in high risk set environments such as race tracks and marine settings. Full wireless control in hand, means less reasons to touch the camera rig, greatly improving safety in these circumstances.

In simple terms, how does it work?

On your gimbal controller, select “60 FPS” in RCP1, the Translator takes that code and converts it into “60 FPS” in RCP2. The module then sends that message to RED V-RAPTOR or KOMODO wirelessly!

Who makes RCP Translator and where?

We do! The module is CNC machined from high-grade 6061-T651 aluminium billet and ertacetal - high performance plastic.

Designed, manufactured, assembled and tested by Ignite Digi, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

We designed RCP Translator mainly for these scenarios:

Control RED V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR XL & KOMODO, with Freefly MōVI Controller & MIMIC, on MōVI Pro & MōVI XL.

Control RED V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR XL & KOMODO, with DJI Force Pro & Master Wheels, on Ronin 2.

Other legacy equipment also works with RCP Translator. We've tested Teradek RT MDR.X, and Latitude MDR-M.

For these setups, you have the option of purchasing the RCP module solo without gimbal specific cables.

RIGGING TO MŌVI PRO

We suggest mounting the RCP Translator to our Accessory Mounts for MōVI Pro, on the op side. This is the cleanest and most rigid mounting solution.

In this position, the CAN and CAM ports are close by, keeping cable lengths to a minimum while providing clearance for the camera package.

If you prefer, cable lengths allow you to mount the RCP module underneath the TSU with dual lock velcro.

NOTE: The control and power cables for MōVI Pro are identical to the cables for MōVI XL for simplicity on set.

MŌVI PRO QUICK SETUP

1. In your RED menu, turn on Wi-Fi, select ‘Ad-Hoc’ Mode and 2.4GHz

2. Plug in the control and power cables between gimbal and RCP Translator

3. Turn on gimbal, put motors to sleep

4. In the MōVI app go: CONFIGURATIONS > DUAL OP > CAMERA TYPE > select RED RCP

5. RCP Translator will automatically turn on

6. With your phone, connect to the Wi-Fi network ‘RCP Translator’ Password: ignitedigi

7. Pop-up browser will appear

PRO TIP: Change this Wi-Fi name and password under ‘Device Settings’ to your own

8. In the browser, select your camera’s Wi-Fi

9. You now have wireless control of your RED

10. You can check the RCP1 & RCP2 connections via the ‘Status’ menu in the pop-up browser

PRO TIP: If the pop-up browser disappears, type http://10.10.0.1/ into your browser’s address bar

RIGGING TO MŌVI XL

The MōVI XL pack includes a Carbon Mounting Plate.

This lightweight plate positions the RCP Translator inside the XL cage on the op side.

In this position, the CAN and CAM ports are close by, keeping cable lengths to a minimum while providing clearance for the camera package.

NOTE: The control and power cables for MōVI XL, are identical to the cables for MōVI Pro for simplicity on set.

In this position, the R2 Power Hub is close by, keeping cable lengths to a minimum while providing clearance for the camera package.

If you prefer, RCP Translator can be mounted to our Accessory Mounts for Ronin 2, on the op side. We include the bolts for this scenario.

FAQ & TROUBLESHOOTING

Flashing Yellow: Waiting for RCP1 & RCP2

The RCP Translator accepts an input voltage of 8-30V DC.

The 2-Pin Lemo is ARRI standard Pin-1 Ground / Pin-2 Positive. The input has reverse polarity protection.

If you have forgotten your password, or if advised by us, you can perform a factory reset.

A factory reset will completely reset all RCP Translator settings and clear all memory.

Remove M2 bolt covering reset button with a T6 Torx.
Press and hold reset button using a paperclip or similar object. LED will rapidly flash red.
After 5 seconds the LED boot animation will play, release the button.
RCP Translator has been reset. Replace the M2 bolt.

⚠️ RCP Translator Access Point credentials will be reset to default:
SSID: RCP Translator
Password: ignitedigi

The RCP Translator can be updated through the configuration webpage. More information coming soon.

Ensure you are still connected to the RCP Translator Access Point. Go to your web browser and navigate to the URL http://10.10.0.1/

It is recommended to change the default Wi-Fi name and password so there’s no issues in situations when there’s multiple RCP Translators on set. You can do so in the device settings page.

1. Close all apps and programs

2. Turn off mobile data

3. Disable automatic connection to other Wi-Fi networks

1. When the captive portal opens, click on the options button and select "Stay connected to this network" or "Use network anyway".

2. Then in your web browser, navigate to http://10.10.0.1/

^this particular issue is most likely to occur in older Android devices.

^^ this fix will also be required for devices that don't allow a file browser to be opened in the captive portal when trying to complete a firmware update.
